Director of Creative Technology

Ralph Appelbaum Associates is seeking a full-time Director of Creative Technology for its Berlin or London studio.

The Director of Creative Technology is a senior-level audiovisual and media systems designer with artistic and technical abilities in the design and specification of technology systems in museums, exhibitions, and  other cultural and corporate visitor center projects.

This position will bridge both the management and the studio layer of the company. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing their own time, and will be able to work efficiently across a wide range of activities and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Produce media systems documentation:  plans & RCPs, details, technical studies, bill-of-materials, cutbooks, narratives and bid ready specifications (typically, but not limited to, smaller projects);
  • Assist in the onboarding & management of technical sub-consultants (typically, but not limited to, larger projects);
  • Coordinate with MEP & other engineering disciplines relevant to media systems and  other specialty technologies;
  • Assist in the review and markup of shop drawing submittals;
  • Visit job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress as required;
  • Generate design tools and templates to allow 3D designers to incorporate AV Systems works into their workflows;
  • Generate budgeting tools for Media & Technology Systems;
  • Keep RAA apprised of emerging products, techniques and trends in the industry through office-wide presentations;
  • Advise project teams on the strengths or shortcomings of specific technology approaches;
  • Identify and outline needs and costs for potential creative technology approaches and sub-consultants across all new projects;
  • Assist marketing team to coordinate with subconsultants to secure qualifications and estimates when necessary;
  • Develop boilerplate audiovisual & media systems specifications and contractual language; and
  •  Standardize AV symbols, codes and nomenclatures across RAA teams and offices.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in museum AV, lighting, or media system design, or other relevant fields 
  • 3+ years of experience in a comparable management-level role
  • BA, other advanced degree, or equivalent years of experience in architecture, interior design, lighting design, or other comparable field
  • Excellent time and task management, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated experience in project management
  • Ability to work efficiently across a wide range of activities and projects
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
