Exhibition Graphic Design Internship (Spring 2023)

Ralph Appelbaum Associates, the world’s largest museum planning and interpretive design firm, is offering paid internships to qualified undergraduate students for Spring 2023. Recent graduates, graduate students, and emerging professionals are also welcome to apply. RAA internships can be completed remotely, in our New York studio space, or a combination thereof. All applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of location within the US.

Internships are open to interested persons looking to further their academic and/or career goals in museums and cultural institutions and/or related areas. Interns will gain valuable work experience and professional development in a dynamic, collaborative, and creative environment.

The Graphic Design Intern works under the guidance of Senior Graphic Design staff to help produce exhibit graphic concept and other project-specific assignments. The Graphic Design staff works closely with RAA’s Content staff, Physical Design staff, and clients to determine the exhibition design visual identity, graphic systems, and layouts. Candidates should have strong conceptual ability and editorial strength.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting Graphic Design staff with exhibit graphic design development;
  • Contributing to exhibit visual identity development;
  • Designing and producing graphic systems, layouts, and documentation (graphic layouts, graphic elevations, maps, illustrations, diagrams, fabrication specifications, etc.);
  • Creating art samples for fabricators and assisting in graphic production;
  • Working on multiple projects concurrently and meeting all project deadlines.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a BA or advanced degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Visual Communications, or related fields;
  • A creative portfolio that demonstrates a strong design sensibility, conceptual clarity, editorial eye, and attention to detail;
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop), Adobe Acrobat Professional, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Proactive approach to time and task management;
  • Strong attention to detail.

Salary Range and Internship Duration

  • Hours: 2-5 days/week or 16-40 hours/week (we can accommodate school schedules)
  • Compensation: $20.00/hour
  • Duration: January to May, and by agreement may be extended through August
