Exhibition Physical Design Internship (m/f/d)

Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA), the world’s largest museum planning and interpretive design firm, is offering paid internships to interested persons looking to further their academic and/or career goals in museums, cultural institutions, and any related fields. Qualified undergraduate students, recent graduates, graduate students, and emerging professionals are welcome to apply. RAA internships are based in our studio in Kreuzberg but our projects are in Germany, Europe, and beyond.

Interns will gain valuable work experience and professional development in a dynamic, collaborative, and creative environment. This internship will cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the multidisciplinary process involved in designing a museum/exhibition across departments. Interns are assigned to projects according to the intersection of their interests and RAA’s staffing needs. They have the opportunity to do real work and actively contribute to their team. Outside of their project work, interns will learn about past projects, potential career paths, and the intricacies of the museum and design industries. 

The Exhibition Physical Design Intern will work under the guidance of their Project Manager and Senior Physical Designers and in close collaboration with RAA’s Content staff, Visual Design staff, and clients.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting Physical Design project staff
  • Preparing architectural drawings (plans, elevations, sections, details, etc.), ranging from conceptual studies to fabrication documents, under project staff supervision
  • Building physical models and mock-ups for internal study as well as client presentations
  • Generating physical models of exhibition spaces and elements
  • Researching materials and finishes
  • Developing presentation skills using multiple techniques
  • Learning the firm’s drafting and modeling standards and file management procedure

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing (or recently completed) a BA or advanced degree in Exhibit Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Set Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Design, or related fields
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks, and/or Revit preferred
  • Proficiency in a 3D modeling program, such as Rhino or Sketchup
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Model-making skills are a plus
  • Hand-drawing and/or sketching skills are a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace preferred
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proactive approach to time and task management
  • Strong attention to detail

Salary Range and Internship Duration:

  • Hours: 2-5 days/week or 16-40 hours/week (we can accommodate school schedules)
  • Compensation: 12.50EUR/hour
  • Duration: at least 3 and up to 6 months, starting August 1, 2024
