Physical Designer (m/f/d)

Ralph Appelbaum Associates is seeking a full-time Physical Designer to join our studio in Kreuzberg. Under the guidance and supervision of the Design Director and other senior physical design staff, this​​ position will help develop exhibits and support design processes at all stages of projects. 

At the heart of RAA’s design philosophy is the desire to seamlessly integrate the visitor experience and the architectural environment. The physical design staff also work directly with the visual designers, Content staff, consultants (lighting, audio/visual, media, etc.), and clients to develop exhibition concepts, designs and layout. Candidates should have strong conceptual ability and a range of skills as detailed below.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports other physical design staff and the Project Manager;
  • Works on multiple projects concurrently to meet project deadlines;
  • Adheres to firm’s drafting and modeling standards and file management procedures;
  • Draws/models exhibit objects in various digital design platforms
  • Develops object displays
  • Develops repeat component details
  • Develops exhibit fabrication details
  • Produces digital models of designs
  • Produces plans, sections, elevations and study models of gallery schemes
  • Generates 3D digital models of exhibition spaces and elements;
  • On occasion, builds physical models and mock-ups for internal study as well as client presentations;
  • Researches and helps to select materials, finishes, and equipment;
  • Prepares interim and workshop visualizations
  • Participates in internal workshops
  • Participates in client workshops

Requirements:

  • Degree in Exhibit Design, Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Design, or related fields
  • 3+ years of experience in exhibition design or related design discipline
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong or native knowledge of written and spoken German
  • Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills
  • Proactive approach to time and task management
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Revit and Vectorworks
  • Proficiency in a 3D modeling program, such as Rhino, Grasshopper, or Sketchup
  • BIM 360 experience is a plus
  • Rendering or other visualization skills are a plus
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) is a plus
