Al Shindagha, situated at the mouth of Dubai Creek, is one of the earliest settlements in the city, rich in cultural heritage. Once home to the Al Maktoum royal family and prominent merchants, this historic district is now the site of the Shindagha Museum, which invites visitors to explore the essence of Emirati life through a series of interconnected pavilions.

After completing the Life on Land pavilion in 2020, the museum expanded to include four additional pavilions: the Traditional Craft House, Traditional Jewelry House, Traditional Healthcare House, and the Beauty and Adornment House. Together, they form a captivating cluster focused on themes of creativity and wellbeing.

RAA’s design approach is centered on a narrative-driven experience, incorporating spatial storytelling and multi-sensory engagement, all while preserving the existing architecture. Upon entry, visitors encounter an introductory object, serving as a gateway into the house’s theme, supported by contextual panels and interpretive displays that invite deeper exploration. Throughout their journey, visitors engage with a spectrum of interactive experiences, from simple tactile and olfactory elements to complex digital installations, allowing them to experiment, create and connect with Emirati traditions. This exhibition narrates the UAE’s cultural evolution, highlighting the journey from survival to spirituality, simplicity to complexity, and creativity to celebration.

Stakeholder engagement was a crucial aspect of this project, involving collaborations with Dubai Municipality, the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, along with consultations from cultural historians and local artisans. What sets this project apart is its commitment to celebrating traditional knowledge and craftsmanship while embracing innovative exhibition design within beautifully restored historic buildings.
