The first major exhibition about Elephantine Island in the Upper Nile, designed by RAA and organized by the Egyptian Museum and the Papyrus Collection of Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, showcases hundreds of archaeological artifacts from the area. Visitors can engage with the collaborative research that deciphered and translated these treasures, offering a rich connection to the ancient culture of Elephantine.

The exhibition features papyrus and ceramic fragments in ten ancient languages, including Aramaic and hieroglyphics, spanning approximately 4,000 years. These fragments reveal insights into the diverse cultures that thrived on the island. Located a mile long and a third of its width, Elephantine Island served as a crossroads for Egyptian, Nubian, and Arab trade routes, fostering a unique mix of languages and religions.

The exhibition’s design facilitates exploration through time in the James-Simon Gallery, spatial navigation in the Greek Court, and state-of-the-art archaeological research in the ERC Gallery. The main hall in the James-Simon Gallery presents an abstract historic excavation tent that highlights the 19th-century excavations. A nearly 60-meter-long timeline and thematic islands explore social life through texts related to medicine, trade, religion, and law.

The Greek Court features a tactile island-shaped table and a mural depicting the first cataract of the Nile, enhanced by a sound installation of the Hunger-Stela in three languages. In the ERC Gallery, interactives and media stations immerse visitors in international research projects, enhancing their understanding of Elephantine’s rich cultural history.
