RAA, alongside the Nevada Division of State Parks and Gizmo Production, has transformed the visitor experience at Fort Churchill State Historical Park in Silver Springs, Nevada. This remarkable site includes a 200-acre military reservation established in 1860, featuring historic structures like the adobe ruins of Buckland Station and a visitor center. The project employs an innovative multi-vocal approach that prominently showcases indigenous voices alongside military narratives, incorporating bilingual audio presentations, including the Paiute language, interactive mapping, and synchronized lighting effects to create an immersive experience.

Originally built following the Pyramid Lake War, Fort Churchill served several critical functions: protecting the Pony Express route, securing the transcontinental telegraph line, and managing intricate relationships between the U.S. military, settlers, and various Indigenous peoples, such as the Northern Paiute, Western Shoshone, and Washoe tribes.

The interpretive program presents this layered history through diverse perspectives, highlighting figures like Chief Numaga, who advocated for peace after the Pyramid Lake War; Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins, whose writings provide essential Indigenous perspectives; and Captain Joseph Stewart, the fort’s first commander. Visitors also hear from Pony Express riders and Chinese railroad workers who shaped regional transportation.

Through innovative interpretive design, including illuminated maps, tactile bronze sculptures, and engaging archaeological experiences, individuals come to understand Fort Churchill not merely as a military outpost but as a multicultural meeting place. The new interpretation honors both the fort’s role in westward expansion and the profound impacts on indigenous peoples who had inhabited the Carson River Valley for thousands of years.
