At the heart of S. C. Johnson’s corporate campus in Racine, Wisconsin, Fortaleza Hall and the adjoining Community Building form a landmark indoor town square. The project celebrates the legacy of Sam Johnson and the spirit of exploration he shared with his father, H. F. Johnson Jr., during their expeditions to Fortaleza, Brazil. It stands beside Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Research Tower and Great Workroom. Designed by Foster + Partners, the complex blends architecture, storytelling, and craftsmanship into an immersive environment.

The focal point of Fortaleza Hall is a fully reconstructed Sikorsky S-38 amphibious aircraft. It is suspended above a 3,400-square-foot inlaid map of North and South America. The map is made of wood and metal set into white terrazzo. It traces the Johnsons’ journey from Racine to Brazil. A 180-foot-long, 18-foot-high carnauba palm forest mural encircles the lower level. The mural is etched into precast concrete and evokes the texture of a Brazilian plantation.

Curved black walnut benches integrate interpretation and sound. An interactive water feature and layered soundscape add sensory depth. A vertical garden of Brazilian plants by Patrick Blanc brings living color to the space. Exhibition areas display original expedition artifacts. Employee amenities complete the building’s daily function.

Narrative elements are embedded directly into the architecture. The result feels permanent and cohesive. Fortaleza Hall serves as a social hub and a symbol of S. C. Johnson’s values. It reflects a culture of innovation, exploration, and design excellence in a light-filled setting.
