The Frederick Douglass Airfield Observatory is a visitor center and living exhibition located in the pre-security area of the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. Commissioned to transform a generic observation deck into a meaningful cultural destination, RAA provided exhibition design, media production, graphic design, and wayfinding services through a collaborative design-build process.

The project’s primary goal is to educate travelers and Rochester residents about the enduring legacy of Frederick Douglass, Anna Murray Douglass, and their descendants. The exhibition emphasizes how the family’s activism continues to inspire social change today while encouraging visitors to explore Rochester’s historic sites and Underground Railroad landmarks. By connecting local history to contemporary civic engagement, the observatory positions the airport as a gateway to the region’s identity.

The exhibition is guided by the concept of the “ripple effect,” illustrating the ongoing influence of the Douglass family. Visitors first encounter stories of descendants, activists, and community impact before arriving at a central statue of Frederick Douglass. Themes throughout the exhibit celebrate Douglass as a powerful speaker, self-made writer, publisher of The North Star, and a pioneer in controlling his public image through photography.

Interactive and immersive elements bring these narratives to life. A listening hall surrounds visitors with recordings of Douglass’s speeches, while the Reflections Interactive invites self-reflection and civic action. The observatory successfully combines museum storytelling with airport functionality, creating an inspiring and accessible public space.
