The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is a vibrant institution located in the heart of Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. Its mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the Japanese American experience. Recently, RAA was commissioned to re-imagine JANM’s core exhibition that explores the historical and ongoing experiences of people of Japanese ancestry in the United States from 1868 to the present.

The exhibition will cover major themes including the rich diversity within the Japanese American community, linkages with other ethnic and racial communities, and the valuable lessons learned from their experiences, particularly emphasizing multigenerational voices. This renovation project aims to reinterpret JANM’s core exhibitions for contemporary audiences, focusing on a visitor-centric approach that incorporates innovative technology and presentation techniques.

To achieve this, RAA facilitated visioning sessions involving staff, board members, key stakeholders, and select community representatives. This collaborative effort informed the museum’s vision for interpreting its entire campus. Together, they co-developed the landmark exhibition titled “In The Future We Call Now.” This exhibition tells the story of the Japanese American community through their establishment, hardship, resilience, and strength, spanning over 150 years.

While many narratives focus solely on the World War II incarceration experience, “In The Future We Call Now” broadens the context by highlighting significant aspects of their journey. By utilizing art, poetry, and a comprehensive timeline, this exhibition aims to engage a diverse audience and foster a deeper understanding of the Japanese American experience.
