The Learning Curve, Indianapolis Public Library

Indianapolis, Indiana

The Learning Curve serves as a welcoming center for families and a dynamic space for active learning. Designed as a 21st-century information hub and teaching lab, it focuses on pilot testing real and virtual programs that highlight the importance of information literacy. A key goal is to bridge the digital divide, ensuring the library resonates with young people from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Learning Curve positions itself as an oasis for children—an engaging space within the larger public library.

Spanning 18,000 square feet, the facility features vibrant, color-coded thematic zones tailored for different age groups, with trained staff activity guides to facilitate learning. Visitors develop the skills necessary to make informed decisions in today’s information-rich environment.

This dedicated space required a strong identity to communicate with its young audience effectively. Every aspect of the Curve, from the logo and graphic identity to the spatial design and programs, was designed to enhance engagement. RAA played a crucial role in the naming process, with “Learning Curve” chosen to reflect the building’s iconic form and signaling an upward educational journey for students.

The identity of the Learning Curve promotes a lively, connected, and entertaining library experience. In 2009, this innovative approach earned the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) the ALA/Information Today, Inc. Library of the Future Award.
