Visitor Center, Rutgers University-New Brunswick
New Brunswick, New Jersey

Rutgers University’s dual goals of attracting the best students and re-engaging alumni led to the commission for a visitor center that will communicate the institution’s global reach as well as tell the Rutgers story.

The 12,000-square-foot building is strategically located to serve as a gateway to the university and a springboard for the 50,000 students, parents, and alumni who tour the school each year. The building houses admissions staff and contains multi-purpose spaces to accommodate large tour groups and university-wide receptions and events.

RAA conceived the 40-foot Rutgers’ Red Glass Wall as a single bold move that brands the Visitor Center lobby, expresses pride and confidence as it welcomes Rutgers guests, and provides an armature for storytelling and information dissemination. In the Wall, navigational exhibits were designed and placed at the fingertips of visitors, enabling them to grasp the overall university layout, orient themselves, and easily navigate from one place to another.

An illuminated graphic timeline shows visitors Rutgers’ traditions, and the reach and impact of the university and its alumni. A three-dimensional graphic rail showcases Rutgers campuses through engaging photos and facts. An interactive touchscreen map functions as a wayfinding element and storytelling device that uses Google Earth satellite imagery to allow users to navigate the Rutgers experience both locally and globally.
